Treyarch Presents: A Conversation With Award-Winning Hollywood Composer Kris Bowers

In closing out Black History Month, Treyarch was honored to host composer Kris Bowers. Led by Treyarch Lead Artist Mike Chubb, the conversation delved into Kris’ career, starting from his first steps playing the piano at age 4 to his present passion for classical music, jazz, and film scores. Bowers has worked on documentaries and films such as Green Book, The Color Purple (2023), King Richard, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Netflix's Bridgerton, When They See Us, and the upcoming One Love: Bob Marley Story. His music accolades span various genres from jazz to hip-hop, including a significant contribution to Jay Z and Kanye West's album, Watch The Throne.

Kris is also nominated for a 2024 Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film for his work as a Director and Composer for The Last Repair Shop. Los Angeles is one of the last American cities to provide free musical instruments to its students. The Oscar-nominated documentary takes a look at the LA-based repair shops where students can go to get their musical instruments repaired for free.

Kris mentions how it all came together, saying, “The Last Repair Shop came about because my co-director, Ben, and I were working on another film a few years ago about my grandfather called Concerto's Conversation. At the same time, he was sent an article about this repair shop here in LA [Los Angeles] that repairs all of the musical instruments for LAUSD. And we realized that it's the last in the country to do so. LA is the last major city to provide free and freely repaired instruments for their school students.”

Our entire studio was thrilled to host Kris and will be rooting for him when the Oscars air later this month.
